As a supplier of food-grade lightweight paperboard molded products, I am often asked by customers a rather professional question: "Does your paper tray resist ultraviolet (UV) rays?" Taking advantage of the free time today, I will thoroughly explain this matter to everyone.
Let's be clear: Is paper pulp inherently afraid of the sun?
To put it simply, paperboard is made from recycled paper or plant fibers. As long as it's a paper-based material, it's naturally not up to par against ultraviolet rays. If exposed to the sun for a long time, the cellulose inside will undergo photochemical reactions, gradually becoming brittle, fading, and even falling apart.
So, if you were to ask me how well it resists sun exposure, to be honest: It's not particularly strong.
However, there are still solutions available.
Although the foundation is not excellent, we can solve the problem by "adding buffs" in the later stage:
- Put on protective clothing: We can apply an anti-UV coating to these special paper supports. It's like applying sunscreen, which can block most of the rays and protect the fibers inside from being damaged.
- Thickness also equals combat effectiveness: The thicker the product, the stronger its resistance to sun exposure. This is because the thick layers can absorb and scatter more ultraviolet rays. Even if the outer layer gets sunburned, the inner layer can still hold up.
The measured results in the laboratory
We conducted a comparative test within the company. We exposed samples with and without coatings to a UV lamp for a long time. The results were clear: the samples without coating began to become brittle after a few weeks; while the ones with coatings, regardless of shape or color, remained quite good.
Of course, if you just place these sheets indoors, the faint light won't matter at all. But if you use them at outdoor stalls or in areas exposed to direct sunlight, you really need to inform me in advance. We'll have to do special treatment.
Final Words
Whether you are packaging pet products or making food trays, although the pulp material has its limitations, as long as it is handled properly, it remains one of the most reliable environmental protection solutions available today.
